Costumed Canadian microtonal math-rock sensation Angine de Poitrine blew up beyond anyone's expectation over the past year, largely on the strength of viral videos from their KEXP session. It's easy to imagine today's new footage making its way around the internet too. After making their UK TV debut back in June, the band took to the US airwaves for the first time Monday night, guesting on Jimmy Fallon's Tonight Show.
On Fallon, the polka-dotted duo played a new song that hasn't featured on an album yet. It's called "Zugzegk," which Fallon pronounced as, essentially, a wordless clearing of the throat. There was a slinky playfulness to the guitar work, sort of like they were soundtracking a surreal surf-rock cartoon, and the momentum stayed high throughout. It's always fun when a band figures out how to translate expert musicianship and music theory nerd-outs into crowd-pleasing popcorn fare.
