A concert tour of Baz Luhrmann’s classic, William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet, has been announced to celebrate the movie’s 20th anniversary. What distinguished it from other versions was its contemporary setting, moving the action from Verona to Verona Beach, California, characters using guns instead of swords, and the film having a modern soundtrack that included The Cardigans, Garbage, and Radiohead. The movie proved a box office hit, becoming the breakthrough roles for lead actors Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes, as well as establishing Luhrmann as a director with a unique visual style. Now, to celebrate three decades since its release, a live tour has been announced for October next year.
