Gather round, you friends of mine, as it might be close to Cookie Time. According to The Hollywood Reporter, a sequel to 1989 classic Troop Beverly Hills is in the works, with Clea DuVall writing and directing the film and Cameron Diaz tapped to star. Plot details are under wraps, but it seems likely that the movie will involve Diaz leading a new troop of rich youngsters who want to learn the values of the Girl Scouts Wilderness Girls.
Diaz long ago established her strong comedic talents as an actress, and has made a welcome return to acting after a recent multi-year break — her next film, the Keanu Reeves-starring Outcome, premieres April 10th on Apple TV. The choice of DuVall as writer/director is also an exciting one: After beginning her career young as an actress in movies like The Faculty and Girl, Interrupted, she’s become an experienced helmer whose credits include the Hulu rom-com Happiest Season, Poker Face, and all six episodes of the Tegan and Sara-inspired series High School.
The original Troop Beverly Hills, starring Shelley Long as the central troop leader, has been a slumber party classic for generations of women, and notably featured a young Jenny Lewis as Long’s daughter. Lewis could potentially make a cameo in the sequel film, though she is pretty busy these days touring with Rilo Kiley.
