Carín León Says “Being More Mexican Than Ever” Is the Country’s Greatest Musical Weapon

Carín León believes the global rise of Mexican music has come in part from artists embracing their identity rather than looking elsewhere for inspiration. Speaking with Rolling Stone Japan during Summer Sonic 2026, León reflected on the international success of Regional Mexican music and artists including Peso Pluma. Find Carín León Tickets Here “Mexicans today have realized that ‘being more Mexican than ever’ is our greatest weapon,” León said. “We’re prouder of our sound than ever before. We’re not trying to imitate music from other countries anymore.” León contrasted the current moment with an earlier period when, he said, many Mexican artists tried to emulate music from abroad. He also described Regional Mexican as the “street music” of his generation, recalling growing up listening to Tupac and Dr. Dre alongside Chalino Sánchez and Sergio Vega. The comments come as León prepares for a seven-show residency at Las Vegas’ Sphere on September 4th, becoming the first Latin artist performing Mexican music to headline the venue.
