Sub Pop is tributing Margo Guryan, the cult favorite singer-songwriter who passed away in 2021, with an upcoming covers compilation called Like Someone I Know. It features a bunch of covers by younger artists, including Empress Of, TOPS, and Frankie Cosmos. Today, before the whole record is out next month, we get to hear Clairo’s rendition of “Love Songs.”
Guryan put out two recordings of “Love Songs” before her passing — one that’s mostly acoustic, and another that taps into some funkier sounds — and Clairo’s interpretation falls more in line with the latter. It was produced by Leon Michaels, who also worked across Clairo’s recent album Charm, and this take on “Love Songs” feels like it could’ve been a B-side on that record. Listen to both Clairo’s version and Guryan’s original below.
Like Someone I Know: A Celebration Of Margo Guryan is out 11/8 on Sub Pop.
