Dave Grohl seems to be sticking by Tenacious D amidst the recent outcry over Kyle Gass’ joke regarding the recent assassination attempt on former president Donald Trump.

During Foo Fighters’ concert at Empower Field in Denver, Colorado on Saturday night, Grohl covered a portion of Tenacious D’s song “Tribute” during the acoustic portion of the band’s set.

Grohl only made it through the first verse before acknowledging that he didn’t know all of the lyrics, adding, “I only played the drums on that song.” Even so, performing even a portion of the song less than a month after Tenacious D found themselves involved in a firestorm of controversy seemed like a conscious show of support from the Foo Fighters frontman.

During a Tenacious D concert in Australia last month, Gass was asked to make a wish for his birthday and responded, “Don’t miss Trump next time.” While Gass initially apologized for the comment as “highly inappropriate, dangerous and a terrible mistake,” he later removed the apology post from his Instagram page.

Gass’ Tenacious D bandmate, Jack Black, said he was “blindsided” by the joke, and decided to cancel the band’s remaining tour dates and put “all future creative plans are on hold.”

Foo Fighters’ concert at Empower Field on Saturday night came as part of the band’s ongoing 2024 US summer stadium tour and apparently marked one of the biggest shows of the band’s career. Next up, Foo Fighters will play a string of gigs across the west coast — get tickets here.
