Tedeschi Trucks Band are back with Future Soul, a record that finds the 12-piece outfit pushing past their comfort zone and into something sharper, louder, and a little unpredictable. Derek Trucks caught up with Kyle Meredith to talk about how the album came together, from working with producer Mike Elizondo to leaning into grunge textures and blown-out tones that feel miles away from their earlier work. It’s a natural evolution, but also one that feels like a reset after their sprawling pandemic-era project, trading in concept for immediacy and instinct. “It feels very present and now and current,” Trucks says, describing a band that’s hitting a new stride. “It feels like a band that’s starting to understand what it’s doing.” That clarity came with a different approach this time around, one that favored momentum over overthinking. “We just said, ‘Let’s go see if we can come up with the best 10 or 12 tunes,’” he explains, noting they actually recorded 17 and had to resist the urge to turn it into another massive statement.

The sessions with Elizondo helped shape their focus, especially as the producer pushed the band toward new sonic territory. “You put on the headphones and the way the drums and bass were just pumping and breathing, there was something more aggressive and edgier about it… it made everyone play differently.” That push shows up all over the record, especially on tracks like “Future Soul” and “Hero,” where the band leans into distortion and just barely controlled energy. Trucks recalls chasing a specific sound for the title track solo: “I want my guitar to sound like the amp or the room is going to blow up.”

Trucks also touches on upcoming shows with Lukas Nelson, Jason Isbell, Sheryl Crow, and Eagles (get tickets here!). He recalls having opened for the legendary Eagles a few years back at a pair of Atlanta shows, ostensibly hometown gigs for TTB. “But we hit the stage and we realized, ‘Oh, I think about 75% of this audience or more have no idea who the hell we are!’ We had to really win them over,” he says. “But that’s going to be fun on that tour, trying to figure out maybe how to win them over earlier in the set.”
