"DIIV GOES POP." We know that's true because it says so on the cover of the Rolling Stone. The fictional Rolling Stone, anyway. Probably not the real one. I haven't checked. In the video for DIIV's new song "Trillions," the members of the band rock expensive suits, lounge around glamorous and expensive-looking residences, fan themselves with crisp $20 bills, and read magazine stories about their own changing sound. Print media, baby! It's still good for something!It's hard to know how much irony is at work on DIIV's upcoming album ZIRP! The press release line about how DIIV represent the "New Alternative" movement alongside contemporaries like Turnstile, Slayyyter, and Eartheater — that's probably a joke, right? It must be. I'm at least 80% sure that's a joke. But I guess we're buying in on the hype anyway, since the first two ZIRP! singles, "The Fountain" and "Kid," both made it onto our lists of the week's best songs. Also, I've heard the album, and I think it's awesome, whether or not it's supposed to function as an extended joke about hype and genres and things of that nature.DIIV really did go pop, at least to the extent that they recorded ZIRP! with actual pop guy A.
