Donald Glover gives promising ‘Community’ movie update: “Something is going to happen soon”

Donald Glover has provided a promising update on the long-rumoured Community spinoff film, saying he thinks it will happen “soon”.

The beloved sitcom ran for six seasons from 2009 to 2015, and after years of fan campaigning, it appeared that a movie had been officially confirmed by Peacock in September 2022.

At the time, it was reported that original cast members Glover, Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Jim Rash and Ken Jeong were all to be reunited for the project, which was being helmed by series creator Dan Harmon.

Since then, however, progress has appeared to stall on the film, but in a new interview with Entertainment Tonight, Glover – who also records music under the name Childish Gambino – gave fans some reassurance that the project is not dead.

“We’re working on it right now,” he said. “I know everybody’s been saying that for forever, but I swear to you, I’m not lying about this. I really think that something is gonna happen soon.”

He said that he and his co-stars “were just on the text chain talking about it”, and said the group chat retains a tight-knit feel. “It’s pretty lovey dovey,” he said. “But when you’re on the other side of the world, you will wake up to 83 messages.”

In late 2024, Jeong said he had read a script for the movie, and said he thought it was going to be “magical” and “real emotional”. That came a few months after Glover confirmed his own involvement, when he said he was “all in” on the project.

McHale also gave an update in 2024, when he said that his schedule was the reason that the filming of the film had been held up, and he said at the time that the likeliest shooting schedule would be “vaguely next year”.

At the start of this year, Chevy Chase addressed his abrupt exit from Community in 2012. His character was killed off in the fifth season after apparent conflicts between Chase and Harmon, with some reports that his firing was due to the use of a racial slur.

When asked how he felt about his role ending, Chase replied, “It was too great a misunderstanding of what I was saying and not saying. I thought that there was at least one person — and another who, for some ungodly reason, didn’t get me, didn’t know who I was, or didn’t realise for one second I’m not racist.”

He added, “They were too young to be aware of my work. Instead, there was some sort of visceral reaction from them.”
