Writer/director Richard Kelly blew our minds in 2001 with Donnie Darko, and Fathom is bringing us back in time again. The surreal sci-fi movie, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, returns to theaters from October 2nd-4th with a brand-new 4K restoration, perfect for the movie’s widest theatrical release to date. The date of October 2nd isn’t a coincidence, as it’s commonly known as “Donnie Darko Day,” the day the film’s strange series of events begin. As the official plot synopsis reminds us: Donnie Darko doesn’t get along with his family, teachers or classmates, but he finds a kindred spirit in Gretchen and guidance from a compassionate psychiatrist who believes hypnosis may unlock hidden truths. Meanwhile, Donnie is haunted by Frank, a mysterious giant bunny only he can see.
