Duffy To Discuss Her Kidnapping In Disney+ Documentary

The young Welsh soul-pop singer Duffy emerged as part of the same retro wave as Amy Winehouse and Adele, and she had a worldwide hit with her 2008 single "Mercy." She seemed to be on a trajectory to become a major star, but she largely stopped releasing music and stepped out of the public eye in the '00s. In 2020, she explained that absence, writing that she'd been "raped, drugged, and held captive" years earlier.

A few months after her initial Instagram post, Duffy shared a long essay about her kidnapping and about the impact that it had on her. Since then, she has mostly avoided drawing further attention. But now, Variety reports that Duffy's story, both of her career and her kidnapping, will be the subject of an upcoming Disney+ documentary.

Disney+ head of content Angela Jain announced the Duffy documentary at the television festival Series Mania on Wednesday, calling it a "really powerful project." Jain said, "She has entrusted us with her story, so we really have a huge responsibility to handle this with care and sensitivity, because she’s speaking about what happened to her for the first time." Production starts soon, and it'll be directed by someone named Gil Callan.

In the essay about her kidnapping, Duffy wrote that she'd been drugged at a restaurant on her birthday, and that she was then continually drugged for four weeks, both in her home and while traveling to a foreign country. She didn't name the country or her kidnapper, and she said that she was initially too afraid to go to the police, though she did file a report later.
