Fire-Toolz – “Cluster Around My Opening!”

It has been a banner year for Angel Marcloid, the exciting and experimental Chicago musician who records as Fire-Toolz. Earlier this year, Fire-Toolz released Lavender Networks, a fascinatingly freewheeling album that combines glitched-out electronics with uncanny-valley pop, death metal screams, and a whole lot of other stuff that doesn't seem like it should make sense together. It does, though. It's fucking awesome. After the album came out, Fire-Toolz remixed Wednesday and worked with past collaborator No Joy on the ridiculously strong EP Big Life, Big Leaf. Now, it's time for a new single.

At least for the moment, Fire-Toolz' new track "Cluster Around My Opening!" — what a title — is a one-off single. The track starts out feeling a bit like a vaporwave take on '80s synth-funk and Angelo Badalamenti soundtracks. But then, it's also got drum 'n' bass breakbeat ripples and head-exploding screamo vocals. The pile-up of different sounds and moods might leave you dizzy and exhausted, but that's the point. This is some true maximalist music. Listen below.
