Frost Children Turn Discomfort Into Art on ‘Tweaker Poem’

After fleeing a stalker in NYC, Frost Children wrote the Tweaker Poem EP during a sleepless 24-hour stint in Tokyo.

Sometimes, artists create some of their most groundbreaking work in times of great strife. For Frost Children, the sibling duo comprised of Angel and Lulu Prost, their latest work falls squarely into that category. Tweaker Poem, arriving via RCA Records, is an ode to a recent struggle the pair endured.

While in New York City, Frost Children found themselves in the midst of a stalker situation. To escape, they fled to Tokyo, where they decided to challenge themselves to write a body of work in 24 hours while sleep-deprived and uncomfortable. The tracklist flows in the exact order the songs were written during the stint, keeping a high-octane pace from “Satellite” to “Faster” that captures just how tense the situation was.

Frost Children expertly explore various influences across each of the six tracks, imbuing them with emo-tinged hyperpop vocals and their signature techo-inspired sound. Like their previous releases, there is no telling where each song goes next. They keep their audience guessing, allowing them to traverse vast soundscapes while wielding each genre as if they’ve written it a hundred times before.

The first and only single, “Satellite,” serves as a hard-dance-inspired introduction to the EP, where booming kicks and hypnotic vocals lead listeners to one of the most compelling hooks on the project. On the EP’s second track, “Creep,” Frost Children deliver a house-inspired record that’s built to shape dancefloors. The duo weaves vocal chops around steady drums and fluttering synths, creating a bouncy soundscape befitting live play. Then, “Afterlife” slows the tempo down without missing a beat. The vocals from both Angel and Lulu are the stars of the show until the tempo quickly ramps up towards the end of the track’s nearly three-minute run time.

Gutted” is the most reminiscent of the 2000s emo heyday while incorporating Frost Children’s modern twist. Roaring low ends power this one, allowing the pair’s nostalgic vocals to carry the torch. It’s one of, if not the most, impressive tunes featured on the EP. The penultimate record, “Light Leak,” is among the most radio-friendly of the bunch. It’s a brief moment of respite, dropping the BPM once again to keep the synths minimal compared to the rest of the project.

On the final track “Faster,” Frost Children bring the EP to an exultant end. It personifies freedom- from both their situation in New York and what concert-goers experience hearing this song live. It pushes the energy higher each second, culminating in a hard techno drop to close out the EP.

Tweaker Poem is an ode to psychotic obsession and transcendent admiration for an Idol— when love letters start to sound more tweaky and oddly spiteful than loving,” says Frost Children. “The project sympathizes with and beautifies the dejected loner, the lover who doesn’t know how to read the room, too obsessed with maintaining a private fantasy to invest in reality. The tweaker, by our definition embodied by the possessive/obsessive laser-focused lover-weirdo, deserves to laugh and cry and have anthems, too.”

With the release of Tweaker Poem, Frost Children have proven again that they’ve earned the title of a mainstay in their respective lane. It’s a testament to their ability to explore, sample, and employ other genres while retaining their core musical philosophy. The EP itself is a triumph overall, showcasing their talents and how they can be utilized to their fullest extent even under duress. With another win like this under their belt, there’s no telling what these two will write next.
