Golden Globes 2025: social media reacts to Timothée Chalamet and ‘A Complete Unknown’ snubs

1 day ago 6

Despite a critically acclaimed performance in A Complete Unknown, Timothée Chalamet left the 2025 Golden Globes empty-handed – see what social media had to say about his snub below.

The film, a Bob Dylan biopic that stars Timothée Chalamet in the main role, was released in US theatres on Christmas Day, with a UK release due January 17, 2025. So far, the film – and Chalamet’s performance in it – have received critical acclaim, leading fans to believe that it would sweep the awards circuit.

However, that wasn’t the case on Monday morning (January 6) as the 2025 Golden Globes kicked off awards season. At the ceremony, the film was nominated for three awards; Best Motion Picture – Drama, Timothée Chalamet for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama and Edward Norton for Best Performance by an Actor In A Supporting Role in a Motion Picture. Ultimately, the film would not win any awards.

Taking to social media in protest, fans of Chalamet and the film have shared their thoughts on the snubs. Some fans have pointed out that Chalamet has lost all four of his nominations so far, comparing him to Leonardo DiCaprio, who famously took decades to win an Oscar despite countless impressive performances. Others have labelled award shows as “pointless”, and are hoping that the snubs aren’t repeated at the Oscars in March.

Check out a handful of reactions below.

A Complete Unknown isn’t the only popular film to have been snubbed at the Golden Globes this year. Fan favourite musical film Wicked walked away with only one award – Cinematic and Box Office Achievement in Motion Pictures. The Substance and Challengers also won only one award apiece. Check out the full list of winners here.

In a four-star review of A Complete Unknown, NME‘s Alex Flood wrote: “Chalamet is undeniably brilliant – and you can see his dedication in every sardonic eyebrow raise, every careful pluck of a string… The most important (and often trickiest) job of any music movie is to get the music right. And this nails that. If you’re a Bob newbie, you’ll leave the cinema ready to dive into his back catalogue. If you’re already a fan, the next few weeks will be spent making playlists of lesser-known B-sides or reading the lore around a scene you weren’t familiar with. And that’s why it was a good idea to make this film – a mad idea, but a good one.”
