An early ‘songwriting work tape’ has been released, showing how The Beatles‘ ‘Day Tripper’ came together. Both ‘Day Tripper’ and ‘We Can Work It Out’ were set to be released as a standalone double A-side single and were kept separate from the album. Now, ahead of a new expanded Special Edition of ‘Rubber Soul’ being released on October 2, a new ‘Songwriting Work Tape’ of ‘Day Tripper’ has been released – offering a rare glimpse into the earliest stages of the song. The song was first developed by John Lennon as a folk song, and later turned into the final version alongside Paul McCartney a month later. The newly released recording shows the two working on it together – and features audio of them laughing together and also noting the high level of sound being captured on tape. The finished version was later completed during an eight-hour studio session.
