Japanese Breakfast Shares New Version Of “The Ballad Of The Witches’ Road” From Agatha All Along

This year, Japanese Breakfast mastermind Michelle Zauner moved to South Korea to learn Korean and to work on her second book, the follow-up to the widely beloved memoir Crying In H Mart. Zauner has been singing and doing interviews in Korean, and she’s also been working on a new album that will reportedly arrive next year. But somewhere in there, Zauner also got together with Jack Antonoff to record a song for the Disney+ Marvel show Agatha All Along.

Agatha All Along follows the further adventures of Agatha Harkness, the charismatically evil witch that Kathryn Hahn played on WandaVision. On the show, there’s a recurring song called “The Ballad Of The Witches’ Road”; Harkness and her coven have to sing it to access the magical realm known as the witches’ road. The part where the cast sings the song was the best part of the first episode. (I only watched the first episode, so that’s all I can really tell you.)

“The Ballad Of The The Witches’ Road” was written by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, the award-collecting songwriting duo who are probably best-known for writing the songs from Frozen. (Robert Lopez is still the youngest-ever EGOT winner, and now he’s also the only person ever to get the double EGOT, winning each of those big awards twice.) The two writers co-produced Japanese Breakfast’s new “pop version” of “The Ballad Of The Witches’ Road” with Jack Antonoff, and it’s definitely going for a sweeping, orchestral Fleetwood Mac thing. It’s pretty good! Listen below.
