Nearly two decades after Malcolm in the Middle signed off, the chaos is back with Hulu’s Life’s Still Unfair revival, and newcomer Keeley Karsten is right in the middle of it as Malcolm’s daughter, Leah. Speaking with Kyle Meredith, Karsten steps into a role in a legacy series that could have easily buckled under expectation, but instead leans into the show’s familiar rhythm. Karsten’s Leah mirrors her father’s intellect and impulse, but brings a sharper emotional awareness to the equation, setting up a dynamic that feels both inherited and freshly unstable. “I had not seen the show before I got the part,” Karsten admits, diving into the deep end by bingeing the original series before filming. “I just wanted to know the family before and the history of the show before I started.” That crash course paid off quickly, especially when stepping onto a set filled with actors who already knew each other’s rhythms inside and out. “It was a little bit intimidating going in, but it didn’t stay that way… They quickly made me feel like a part of the family.” That comfort translated on screen, particularly in the show’s signature fourth-wall breaks, which Karsten says initially felt unnatural. “You’re told not to look at the camera your whole career, and then suddenly you can,” she says, laughing. “But once you get it, it becomes second nature. It’s like explaining something to a friend.”

Leah’s personality lands somewhere between hyper-aware and completely oblivious, which becomes one of the revival’s most effective comedic engines. “Leah knows a lot, but she’s really unaware about a lot of things,” Karsten explains. “She wants social connection… but she says things that are kind of jarring to everybody else.” That push-and-pull shows up in moments that veer from uncomfortable to hilarious, including a scene where Leah spirals into a chaotic laugh that had the crew pushing her further each take. “They kept saying, ‘more, bigger,’ and I was just exploding into laughter in this silent hallway,” she recalls. “That’s the moment where she could be crazy.” It’s that same tonal tightrope the original series walked so well, where absurdity masks something sharper underneath.
