Massane and Qrion will be taking the stage together at FNGRS CRSSD and This Never Happened’s Cross Pollination in San Diego, and they’ve collaborated on a playlist for a taste of what’s to come.
This Never Happened might have featured standout solo releases from artists over the years, but a collaborative spirit also runs deep through its core. The Lane 8-led imprint has continued to push sonic boundaries while embracing a familial ethos, which was put on full display in 2020’s Cross Pollination mini-album and its recent Cross Pollination II follow-up. Now, that mentality has transitioned to a live environment with an event in San Diego that bears the same name.
Cross Pollination, a collaborative event between This Never Happened and FNGRS CRSSD, is scheduled for August 9 at Waterfront Park, and will feature a bevy of talented acts from the imprint who will go back-to-back with each other. Among these sets is Massane b2b Qrion, which will bring two of the most forward-thinking minds in the scene together for a memorable performance.
While Massane and Qrion both have unique artistic journeys within the scene, they’ve also run in parallel. Both artists have graced similar labels beyond This Never Happened, such as Anjunabeats, while championing melodic house and progressive sounds. That wasn’t the only similarity either, as while Qrion was raised in Japan and Massane in France, the two both currently call Austin, Texas, home.
“Qrion and I are both based in Austin, so it was super easy to link up for a studio session,” Massane shared. “We clicked right away and became friends, jamming on a few different ideas that eventually turned into ‘Go On.’ Since we’re both touring the US a lot, we thought it’d be fun to hit the road and play a few B2B shows together!”
Qrion echoed that sentiment, stating that she first learned Massane lived in Austin last year and that it was a no-brainer to begin working together on music. “I found his workflow and approach to production very easy to connect with,” she said. “He’s become a great friend who I genuinely enjoy both making music and playing B2B sets with. When we toured together, we would often watch each other’s sets, and I learned a lot from seeing the way he performs.”
The two artists are not strangers to each other behind the decks, and their set at Cross Pollination is sure to be filled with plenty of soul-stirring emotions and dancefloor-ready moments that will sweep the crowd off its feet. “[I’m] excited for this one. It’s extra special because it’s going to be a true This Never Happened crowd. Expect plenty of surprises and maybe unreleased music,” Massane shared.
[Going back-to-back is] always a lot of fun because we can play tracks that I probably wouldn’t get to play outside of our B2B sets. We’re also constantly discussing what to play next and building the set together as we go, which makes the whole experience really enjoyable.
QrionThose catching their set might very well be treated to some new music, too. Massane shared that he has “several surprises” that are coming soon, and Qrion mentioned that she’s been experimenting with vocal tracks and club-focused music. “I’m really looking forward to playing them out at shows and seeing how people respond before deciding what to release,” she shared as the conversation came to a close.
To get everyone hyped for what’s to come, Massane and Qrion curated a collaborative playlist featuring tracks they’ve loved lately. This includes selections from Romain Garcia, Tourist, Rinzen, Eden Prince, Dosem, Ezequiel Arias, Durante, and more. Give it a spin for a taste of what’s to come during their set in San Diego.
