Metodi Hristov Shares Favorite Drumcode Tunes to Celebrate Label Debut

1 month ago 13

Metodi Hristov just dropped his debut EP on Drumcode, Build To Destroy, and sat down to discuss some of the tracks from the label that have inspired him.

Over the past decade, Bulgarian DJ and producer Metodi Hristov has been on a tear in the techno scene. His tracks have landed on labels including Terminal M, Octopus Recordings, Filth On Acid, and more, but one imprint he hadn’t released on was the legendary imprint Drumcode. That changed today as Metodi Hristov dropped off Build To Destroy, his debut EP on the Adam Beyer-led label.

This two-tracker features everything from sexy synth lines and gripping vocals to punchy elements and atmospheric bass stabs. Born out of a three-month-long studio session, these tunes from Metodi Hristov are some of his best work yet. Build To Destroy fits perfectly within the Drumcode discography, which makes sense, considering the man behind the music has been influenced by the label for years. So, to celebrate, he shared some of the tunes from the imprint he feels have impacted him the most.

For this list, Metodi Hristov decided not to dig too deeply into the label’s discography, mentioning, “We all know and love the undeniable anthems like “Rave” by Sam Paganini, “1992” by Alan Fitzpatrick, or “Moon Rocks” by Enrico Sangiuliano.” Instead, he’s focused on Drumcode’s new sound, which he finds “exciting and very diverse!”

It’s fitting that Drumcode boss Adam Beyer sits atop the list, with Hristov saying that he thinks “Desert Queen” is “the best Adam Beyer track ever.” Reminiscing about the first time he heard it, he shared that its vocals immediately made him smile, and he was impressed at how they were used.

“It was not only the melodies and the powerful beat that caught my attention, but it was also very interesting to listen to the unusual arrangement. I still don’t know what the vocals say, but it’s sexy and incredibly on-point. The phonemes and how they are put in space are much more important for me,” Hristov said. “And this is what I like as a producer about our music – I don’t need to say out loud what I want to say. I can just give a feeling of it and make others’ imagination work.”

Adam Beyer, Layton Giordani, and Green Velvet’s collaborative remix of Sharam’s PATT,” which has infected speakers worldwide this year, is next on Hristov’s list. He quickly joked about it coming off like he was sucking up to Beyer with this pick but went on to say that he heard more of Giordani in the tune.

“I always liked this track by the legendary Sharam from the legendary Deep Dish because It’s a very feel-good track with a very simple message that makes you feel super cool on the dancefloor,” he shared. “I’m very grateful to Layton, Adam, and Green Velvet for resurrecting this classic in a way that does not make you feel lame when playing it as a techno DJ.”

Switching gears to another artist, Bart Skils’Roll The Dice” came up in the conversation. “There is no inappropriate moment for this track. You can play it everywhere, at every moment, and with a very wide range of tempo!” Hristov said. “Very strong lows and a very interesting vocal that makes you continue listening and try to decipher it even though the track is a little bit monotonic, but that doesn’t matter when everything is so on point. This vibe makes you keep rolling!”

The subterranean nature of techno is front and center for the next pick from Hristov, as he shared his love for Marie Vaunt and her tune “Dark Room.” “I really like the aggressive dark vibe of this track! And those Japanese vocals – mama-mia!” he exclaimed. “This is definitely my favorite track by Marie Vaunt! It is a peak-time banger that always helps me elevate the crowd’s mood!”

Speaking of elevating the crowd’s mood, the final tune selected by Hristov is an absolute hypnotizer, “Filthy” by Mha Iri. He can’t get enough of the spellbinding vocals in the middle of the tune, claiming that every time he plays it, it feels like “witchcraft.” “It sounds like a mind-controlling spell, and it feels like it because, at this moment, people are going completely crazy! What a banger!” he shared with a smile to bring the list to a close.
