Nick Cave and Warren Ellis are working on music for the Death Of Bunny Munro adaptation, and have teased that it’ll have a Grinderman sound.
Last week, Ellis spoke to NME about being in The Bad Seeds, working with Cave to create his latest album ‘Wild God‘, and the upcoming Death Of Bunny Munro adaptation.
The adaptation of Cave’s 2009 book was first mooted back in 2010, back when Ray Winstone was reportedly “dying” to play the lead. The development of the six-part series was announced in November last year by Sky Studios, along with Matt Smith’s casting.
When asked by NME if he and Cave were working together to make music for the show, Ellis confirmed: “Yes, we are. I don’t know if I’m meant to say that.
“Nick’s been involved in overseeing it in some capacity, just looking on. We are doing the music for it. That might be the chance for a bit of the old Grinderman, maybe!”

Referencing what Cave had previously called his “porn star moustache” in a post on The Red Hand Files, Ellis added: “That was the moustache that changed the course of history! I miss that. When I see photos of Nick from then, I’m like, ‘There’s my man’.
“That was a great look. I don’t think he’s ever looked more evil; it was fabulous. That’s when you know – when the moustache appears!”
When it was put to him the the book was written and came out in between the release of ‘Grinderman’ and ‘Grinderman 2’, Ellis said it “may well” sound similar.
He went on to joke: “I’ll send Nick a text saying, ‘The guy from NME wants Grinderman to get back together, he’s heartbroken, he couldn’t get tickets for Oasis, so let’s get back together when we’re 80 and offer Oasis the support act in Pompeii or Slane Castle or something’.”
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds recently announced their first North American tour in seven years, in support of the band’s recently released 18th album ‘Wild God’.
In a four-star review of the album, NME wrote: “The record nearly took its name from album tracks ‘Joy’ (an intimate piano and soundscape song owed to “bright, triumphant metaphors of love”) and ‘Conversion’ (a fiery testament to life on the other side of being “touched by the spirit and touched by the flame”), but ‘Wild God’ just captures those powerful mysteries that seem to fall from the sky – in all their shapes and sizes.
“Bad Seeds records are infamously loaded with gothic doom and gloom. Of course, this ain’t a poptastic LOLfest, and still coloured with the many shades of a life so challenging and weathered. But never has Cave been so freewheelin’ than on the giddy ‘Frogs’, “Jumping for love and the opening sky above” as “Kris Kristofferson walks by kicking a can in a shirt he hasn’t washed for years“. With a lust for life, the once-dark prince is letting the light in.”
