Pig&Dan’s ‘Destination Unknown III’ is a Journey Worth Taking

1 hour ago 2

Pig&Dan return to Bedrock Records with Destination Unknown III, a ten-track project influenced by ambient, dub, trip-hop, and cinematic electronica.

For more than two decades, Pig&Dan have built their reputation inside dark warehouses and festival stages, dropping techno and progressive records crafted to move the place. But every few years, the British-Spanish duo reminds listeners of their expansive artistry.

On Destination Unknown III, Pig&Dan pull back the curtain to reflect on their creativity and explore the ambient, dub, trip-hop, and cinematic influences that have inspired their sound. It’s the latest chapter in a downtempo series that began in 2014 and continued with its sophomore release in 2022.

“We wanted to bring all our influences into one musical journey without having to put a genre or style stamp on it,” shared Pig&Dan. “Breaking rules of what albums are all about these days, going anti-generic and full-out artistry.”

Released via John Digweed‘s Bedrock Records, the ten-track album steps further away from club energy and feels better suited to sunrise drives than to warehouse strobe lights. Unless the warehouse has plenty of decompression options around the dancefloor.

Rather than treating the album as a collection of singles, Pig&Dan approach Destination Unknown III somewhat like a film score. Every track feels connected, flowing naturally into the next as if documenting different chapters of the same journey. It’s a refreshing take in an era governed by playlist culture and algorithm-friendly releases.

That intention is immediately clear on the opener “Flying Through These Galaxies.” Released ahead of the album in June, the track eases listeners into the world of Destination Unknown III with floating vocals, warm rhythms, and sharp percussion. It slowly earns the listener’s attention by evoking a sense of drifting between memory and meditation.

The album’s central themes begin to reveal themselves through tracks like “One Creation,” “Our Future,” and the closing piece, “Mother Nature.” While each composition carries its own sound, together they paint a picture centered on the connection between people, nature, and the spaces we occupy. Gentle phonetic echoes appear almost like affirmations, while dub-inspired basslines and trip-hop grooves provide enough movement to keep the album grounded in its tranquil atmosphere.

Elsewhere, tracks such as “Tripping In The Deserts On Mars” and “The Smoke” showcase Pig&Dan’s resourceful curiosity to blur the lines between genres. Elements of reggae, breakbeat, ambient, and cinematic electronica are mixed together, making the album feel less concerned with fitting inside a box and more interested in following emotion wherever it leads.

Perhaps the album’s greatest strength is its restraint. There’s never a moment when Pig&Dan feel compelled to release an insane drop. Instead, songs like “The Weight of Expectations,” “Daylight Slips Away,” “Truth Within,” and “Bright Side” unfold patiently, allowing subtle details to emerge with each listen when given the proper attention.

That philosophy mirrors the duo’s own outlook. In discussing the project, Pig&Dan explained they intentionally pushed themselves beyond familiar territory, refusing to place a stylistic label on the music while centering themes of unity, nature, and shared existence. It’s a bold creative decision considering the duo’s longstanding reputation as club producers.

Yet Destination Unknown III never feels like an artist abandoning their roots. Rather, it feels like musicians reconnecting with influences from long ago and approaching music production with an open mind.

For longtime fans, this album offers another compelling entry in a series that continues to evolve with each drop. For newer listeners, it serves as an introduction to Pig&Dan’s musical identity beyond techno.
