Sony has unveiled an upgraded version of the PlayStation 5, with the Pro coming out later this year.

Described as the “most advanced and innovative console hardware to date,” the PlayStation 5 Pro will feature an upgraded GPU, advanced ray tracing and AI-driven upscaling.

The upgraded GPU has a 28 per cent faster memory than the base PS5 console, allowing for up to 45 per cent faster rendering for gameplay while the improved ray tracing tech will allow for rays to be cast at double, and at times triple, the speeds of the current PS5 console.

Other enhancements include PS5 Pro Game Boost, which applies to more than 8,500 backward compatible PS4 games and will improve the performance and stability of the titles on the new console. The PlayStation 5 Pro has been described by Sony as “the most visually impressive way to play games on PlayStation”.

The PlayStation 5 Pro is due to launch November 7 for a recommended retail price of £699.99. It will include a 2TB SSD, a DualSense wireless controller and a pre-installed copy of ‘Astro’s Playroom’. However, the PS5 Pro is only available as a disc-less console with fans needing to purchase a separate disc drive.

Pre-orders for the PlayStation 5 Pro will go live September 26 via the PlayStation store, while other retailers will be opening pre-orders on October 10.

Sony has confirmed that a number of titles will receive free updates to allow gamers to fully utilise the new console’s improved tech. As it stands 13 titles have been confirmed to receive the patch, including Alan Wake 2 and The Last Of Us Part 2, but it’s been reported that more than 40 games will get a special PS5 Pro patch.

“Our PS5 journey would not be possible without the millions of players that have supported us through the years and have shared with us their love of gaming,” wrote Sony CEO Hideaki Nishino. “Whichever console option players choose, whether it’s PS5 or PS5 Pro, we wish to bring everyone the very best gaming experience that fits their needs.

“In other news, Star Wars Outlaws has released a new patch to fix the “incredibly punishing” stealth missions.
