Iggy Pop is set to turn 79 years old later this month, but there’s no taking the young punk out of the iconic singer. The Godfather of Punk thoroughly rocked Coachella on Sunday with an electrifying set of Stooges and solo favorites before exiting the stage in a coffin.
After skipping out onto the Mojave stage, Iggy immediately removed his vest to reveal his twisted and leathered torso as he and his band (including Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Nick Zinner) launched into the Stooges classic “T.V. Eye.”
Three more Stooges songs followed — “Raw Power,” “I Got a Right,” and “Gimme Danger” — before Iggy offered up two of his biggest solo tunes: “The Passenger” and “Lust for Life.”
Then, the punk legend delivered the one-two punch of the Stooges’ “I Wanna Be Your Dog” and “Search and Destroy.”
Prancing around with a noticeable limp after years of destroying his body onstage, Iggy continued dipping into the Stooges catalog for “Down on the Street” and “1970,” squeezing in a shortened version of his solo song “Nightclubbing,” before returning to his Stooges canon with “Loose” and “1969.”
The Rock & Roll Hall of Famer ended the set with his festive “Funtime,” and toward the end of the song entered a coffin that had been conspicuously displayed on the stage. The door was closed, and a roadie wheeled Iggy off the stage with a hand truck as the rest of his band finished the song and the set.
Coffin or not, there was nothing dead about Iggy Pop’s Coachella performance. A little over a year away from turning 80, the punk godfather is as alive as he’s ever been, and proved he’s still one of the greatest live performers of all time.
Fans can catch Iggy at Weekend 2 of Coachella on April 19th, as well as the Mosswood Meltdown festival in Oakland, California, on July 18th, and opening for My Chemical Romance at Comerica Park in Detroit on August 21st. Pick up tickets here and here.
