Security guard who sparked Chappell Roan debacle says he takes “full responsibility”

The security guard who sparked a debacle between popstar Chappell Roan and footballer Jorginho has spoken out about the incident.

On March 22, the former Chelsea and Arsenal player took to social media to claim Chappell Roan’s personal security guard had acted in an “aggressive” manner towards his 11-year-old daughter during breakfast at a São Paulo hotel. Jorginho said his daughter simply “walked past the table” while spotting the singer at breakfast – prompting the guard to “berate” the family, leaving their daughter in tears.

Roan later addressed the claims, saying that she “didn’t even see” the incident take place and that the security guard was not her own.

Now, security guard Pascal Duvier has broken his silence on the fiasco on an Instagram post. “I do not normally address online rumors, but the accusations currently circulating are false and constitute defamation,” his statement begins.

Duvier went on to take “full responsibility” for the incident, and clarified he was at the hotel “on behalf of another individual”, and not Chappell Roan.

“I made a judgment call based on information we obtained from the hotel, events I had witnessed in the days prior and the heightened overall security risk of our location,” he added. “My sole interaction with the mother was calm and with good intentions, and the outcome of the encounter is regretful”.

Following Jorginho’s post, the mayor of Rio de Janeiro banned the popstar from performing at Todo Mundo no Rio festival, adding: “I doubt that Shakira would do that!”

The incident follows Roan’s now-viral encounter with hordes of paparazzi in Paris, in which the pop star said she felt “disregarded as a human” and turned the tables by filming them.

The former NME Cover star has routinely called out disrespectful behaviour from fans and the music industry, once controversially comparing fame to “an abusive ex-husband” in 2024.

She has also previously shared her thoughts on “weird” and “creepy” followers, calling out the “predatory behaviour” of so-called “superfans” that includes “nonconsensual physical and social interactions”, and also hit back at photographers who yelled at her on the VMAs red carpet.

Elsewhere, Doja Cat has praised Chappell Roan’s authenticity in a candid new video revealing borderline personality disorder diagnosis.
