‘Silent Hill 2’ and ‘Star Wars Jedi: Survivor’ fans claim PS5 Pro updates have made them worse

Fans of Silent Hill 2 and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor have claimed recent PS5 Pro enhanced updates have made the games worse.

The PlayStation 5 Pro launched earlier this month with a number of technical upgrades to improve graphics and handling. It was described as the “most advanced and innovative console hardware to date,” and Sony confirmed a number of existing titles would get special PS5 Pro Enhanced updates to make use of the console’s increased power. They also promised the console would be “the most visually impressive way to play games on PlayStation”.

However, fans of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor have been experiencing a number of problems with the updated version of the game.

“We’ve got issues with this one,” say Digital Foundry in their review of the game. “While Star Wars Jedi: Survivor serves up some upgrades over the standard PS5, there are severe image quality concerns when elements like foliage interact with ray tracing. The end result is a strobing image quality downgrade that makes this Pro patch difficult to recommend.”

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor on PS5 Pro has problematic image quality issues, even though the return of RT in performance mode is welcome. @oliemack and @Dachsjaeger discuss this one, and we'll be tackling similar problems in Silent Hill 2 and others soon: https://t.co/4OjBayoOei pic.twitter.com/RhyMDXSuVV

“It boggles my mind that an issue I saw immediately, this sort of fizzing, flickering noise around foliage was either missed by the devs, or they chose to willingly ignore it. Worse, there’s no fallback option to the old image settings,” reads one reply. “No hardware on this planet can fix this game apparently,” said another.

Despite promising the Silent Hill 2 remake would be PS5 Pro Enhanced, the update doesn’t appear to have been put live yet, leading to a number of issues when the game is played on the new console. “You cannot just advertise something that is false. This game has not been touched. This is the standard PS5 executable running directly on PS5 Pro hardware without so much as a glance by the developers,” wrote one fan on Reddit.

wtf is going on with Silent Hill 2’s PS5 Pro patch? I thought it wasn’t out, but I heard Digital Foundry say they think what’s out IS the patch and it’s just really bad.

Sad and embarrassing that we are seeing a few games look worse on pro than base. Sort it out.

“100 per cent a game should NOT say Pro enhanced until it actually has the patch that enhances it,” said another fan. “This game hasn’t been patched and actually is a hard DOWNGRADE on the Pro. No word from the devs yet either. Not good.”

So my wife bought me the PS5 Pro. I didn’t need it, but I am not complaining. However, what I AM going to complain about is PSSR currently fucking up Silent Hill 2. Look how bad that shimmering is. pic.twitter.com/F0yVUijPwG

“It’s starting to get really worrying how many games are now worse or barely improved on PS5 Pro,” said another fan on Resetera. “Seems like games that already looked good on base PS5 look good or great on PS5 Pro but games where image quality was really bad and should benefit the most (Alan Wake 2, Jedi Survivor) somehow still look bad or even worse,” wrote another with a third saying: “I love spending £800 to get worse versions of games.”

However, a number of fans have also been defending the PS5 Pro. “It requires patience. Teething issues aren’t exactly uncommon for new hardware these days, and the games I’ve played on Pro have been excellent so far. I get the concerns but people are making it out like it’s a doomed, dead platform that will never get any further support. It’s only been out for about 10 days.”

When the PS5 Pro was announced, fans were divided over its price point with Sony charging £699.99 for the upgraded console while the discless PS5 retails for £389.99. Defending the price tag, PlayStation senior principal project manager Toshi Aoki said they were only targeting “the most engaged” players.

In other news, a Minecraft player has shared their impression recreation of France’s national art museum The Louvre, claiming it took them 1000 hours to create.
