The fuzzily euphoric Brooklyn-based band smush already showed themselves willing to take on a song as shitty as Owl City's "Fireflies" on standards, the all-covers EP that they released earlier this year. Early next year, they'll follow it with the new full-length i'll always wish,,. (The commas are theirs.) We've already posted lead single "milkweed butterfly," and their new one "john dearly" is out today.
The title has to be a play on "John Deere," right. Maybe it's not. Maybe it's just somebody's name. In any case, "john dearly" is a lot brighter and more energetic than most of the stuff that get called shoegaze these days. It's got a fun, glitchy sense of motion working for it. Singer/bassist Emily Borrowman says, "'john dearly' is about the experience of being in your early adulthood and still feeling like a child. It touches on making the same mistakes over and over again and feeling stagnant." Listen below.
i’ll always wish,, is out 1/22.
