Sony “Cautiously” Moving Forward with Ending PlayStation Discs Despite Gamers’ “Strong Views”

Sony has confirmed to investors that it will “cautiously” move forward with phasing out PlayStation discs, which will no longer be sold beginning in January 2028. The company also acknowledged major backlash from the gaming community in response to its July 1st announcement. “There are various reasons we made this decision, the biggest being that the digitalization of content overall has been progressing, that’s the big factor,” Sony Chief Financial Officer Lin Tao said through a live interpreter during a Q&A following its first-quarter earnings call. “It’s not just for PlayStation, but for all kinds of content, digitalization is progressing.” Tao continued, “So when we think about the future — and we put in a lot of thought and time, and we cautiously considered this — we came to this conclusion, and we’re going to cautiously move this forward.” She also acknowledged PlayStation fans’ “strong views” and “emotions” connected to owning discs, promising to “engage the gamers” in the digital ecosystem.
