The Pitt star Noah Wyle has called for an NHS (National Healthcare Service) style system in the US while promoting the show in London.

The actor was speaking at the launch of the HBO Max streaming service on Tuesday (March 24). During the discussion about the show, in which he plays a doctor during a 15-hour shift at a fictional Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Centre.

Each episode represents an hour in the shift, and the modern day issues with healthcare in America, which is privatised, are present in each story.

Discussing the difference between this and the UK, where the NHS provides free healthcare for all, Wyle stated his belief that a similar model should be established in America. “Our system at the moment is laden with the insurance companies being the intermediary … and care being predicated by the algorithm that the insurance company dictates” he said (via The Hollywood Reporter).

“So it’s really become a profit-driven, quality-of-care-diminishing system. And I think it’s really enviable that that’s not part of your conversation. I personally think we need some sort of national healthcare service in the United States. We need universal coverage for everybody.”

He then spoke about how he believed the way the show works means it could feasibly run for as long as they want.

“One of the gratifying things about season two is that we realised that we don’t need a big deus ex machina plot device to keep this engaging,” he explained. “That there is something really fascinating about watching everyday people try to get through the course of their day, beset by all the trials and tribulations that come over the course of their day. If that is satisfying television, then this show could run forever.”

The most recent episode of The Pitt dealt with the subject of ICE (US Immigration and Customs Enforcement), prompting mixed reactions from fans.
