Tyler, The Creator Hosts Epic MF Doom Tribute Set With Erykah Badu, Live Orchestra and More

2 days ago 7

It’s been just over four years since MF DOOM passed away, and this weekend, the late icon received a memorable tribute at Tyler, The Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival.

Unfolding over the course of 55 minutes Sunday night, the tribute included a spirited live orchestra and appearances from Madlib and the one and only Erykah Badu. Over the loudspeakers, listeners could hear DOOM tracks like “I Sell Rhymes Like Dimes,” “One Beer,” “Dead Bent” and more as his collaborator Madlib vibes out nearby.

For her part, Badu popped out to lend her vocals to DOOM’s “Doomsday.” You can watch the immersive performance for yourself below.

The tribute stands as just another example of MF DOOM’s undeniable influence. Before acts like Tyler surfaced, DOOM was pushing rap in unexpected and indelible ways, using an eccentric imagination with unimpeachable fundamentals to become one of the most distinct personas the rap world has ever produced.

Following his passing on Halloween 2020, his wife, Jasmine, used an Instagram account to announce his death and commemorate his legacy.

"The greatest husband, father, teacher, student, business partner, lover and friend I could ever ask for," she wrote in the caption. "Thank you for all the things you have shown, taught and given to me, our children and our family. Thank you for teaching me how to forgive beings and give another chance, not to be so quick to judge and write off. Thank you for showing how not to be afraid to love and be the best person I could ever be. My world will never be the same without you. Words will never express what you and Malachi mean to me, I love both and adore you always. May THE ALL continue to bless you, our family and the planet."
