A movie based on the viral Siren Head meme is in development with Weapons director Zach Cregger developing the script.

The internet horror sensation is based on a 2018 illustration by Trevor Henderson, which evolved into a character that has featured in fan-made animation, stories, and video games. The character is a tall skeletal being with sirens for a head, and has become the latest Gen-Z sensation to make it to the big screen.

The Hollywood Reporter states that Cregger will be writing the movie with Brian Duffield, who is the director of the upcoming novel adaptation Whalefall and is set to be at the helm on Siren Head as well.

The deal is a reflection of the popularity of internet culture in Hollywood, particularly within the horror genre. Two of the biggest breakthrough hits of the year have come from Gen-Z filmmakers that got their start on YouTube. Backrooms, which is currently in cinemas, was directed by 20-year-old Kane Parsons and was inspired by the “creepypasta” horror stories found online. The film will receive a special extended edition re-release this weekend with 15 minutes extra footage.

Another big 2026 hit has been Obsession, following a young man who makes a wish to force his crush to fall in love with him, only for the result to have deadly consequences. Director Curry Barker came to prominence making short films on YouTube, and partly based the story on an episode of The Simpsons.

Cregger’s Weapons became one of the biggest horror hits of last year, telling the story of a town searching for its children after they mysteriously disappear. Amy Madigan won an Oscar for her performance as the terrifying Aunt Gladys, with a prequel to the movie, based on her character, planned for 2028.
