Yes have announced their new album, Aurora, their 24th overall, out June 12th via InsideOut and Sony Music. In advance of its release, the prog-rock legends have unveiled the title track along with an accompanying music video.
Aurora is the band’s second studio album with the current lineup, which includes Steve Howe on guitar, Geoff Downes on keyboards, Jon Davidson on vocals, Billy Sherwood on bass, and Jay Schellen on drums.
Schellen was recruited in 2023 following the passing of Alan White, after having served as a tour and session drummer for the band for a number of years. Billy Sherwood meanwhile was recruited in 2015 following the passing of founding member Chris Squire. Sherwood previously played keyboards for the group during the late ’90s.
Howe said about the album, “It’s always been about collaboration, somebody can write a song, but until everybody puts their contribution in it isn’t really a Yes song. We’re not trying to echo the past; we’re carrying the spirit of Yes forward and turning it into something new.”
In support of the LP, Yes have released a music video for its title track and opening song. The piece “Aurora” showcases symphonic elements not seen since 2001’s Magnification, underscoring a spritely and bright piece of music befitting the Yes legacy.
Regarding the importance of the title track to the overall shape of the album, Davidson said, “The title immediately resonated with Steve Howe and sparked visual inspiration for artist Roger Dean, setting a conceptual tone that would guide the project.”
Yes were set to embark on a UK tour later this month, but it has been postponed because Steve Howe has to undergo a medical operation.
In the meantime, Former Yes members have also kept themselves busy. Iconic former Yes frontman and founding member Jon Anderson is going on tour starting April 17th with the Band Geeks. Meanwhile, similarly iconic and formerly caped keyboardist Rick Wakeman released a new studio album just this past November.
