Colin Stetson is a busy man. Earlier this year, the master of tense drone-moan-squawk baritone sax teamed up with fellow avant-garde OGs Greg Fox and Trevor Dunn to release the album Nethering. Next month, Stetson and experimental bagpiper Brìghde Chaimbeul will release their new collaborative LP All The Light In The World. Now Stetson is also one third of 10¹⁷, a new band that also includes Stian Westerhus and Erland Dahlen, two powerhouse musicians from the Norwegian jazz world.Stetson, Westerhus, and Dahlen have joined forces to form 10¹⁷ — that's a reference to the energy theoretically needed to create a black hole. (The trio presumably has nothing to do with Gucci Mane's 1017 Bricksquad crew, though that would be interesting.) Westerhus is a guitarist who has played in groups like Jaga Jazzist and Puma, while Dahlen is a drummer who has made a bunch of solo records and played for bands like Madrugada. Dahlen once played drums for Westerhus' band Pale Horses, whose album Maelstrom came out on Rune Grammofon in 2014. 10¹⁷ have already been touring since 2024, and they've apparently got a new album on the way.
