bootcamp times up album cover

So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.

KENNYHOOPLA – “ORPHAN” (ft. PARAMORE’S ZAC FARRO)

Genre-blurring artist KennyHoopla keeps working with A-list pop punk drummers. Having collaborated with Travis Barker in the past, he now teamed up with Paramore’s Zac Farro, who produced and drummed on his new dance-punk-fueled single “Orphan.” It’s the first taste of Kenny’s just-announced EP, Conditions of an Orphan, which comes out on September 19 via The Orchard.

BOOTCAMP – “ASYLUM”

Iowa City hardcore punks Bootcamp have announced their debut LP, Time’s Up, due August 22 via Convulse. Here’s the raw, fast-paced, 91-second lead single “Asylum.”

WOMBO – “S.T. TILTED”

Wombo’s new album Danger in Fives is out Friday and here’s the final pre-release single. “It’s the first song we wrote after the Slab EP that made it on Danger in Fives,” says guitarist Cameron Lowe. “We weren’t sure it was going to work, but all the contrasting parts ended up being cool. It’s rare for a Wombo song to be written on guitar first like this one, with some of the bass and drum parts jammed out in the basement afterwards. The wacky guitar part came last.”

ADA LEA – “BOB DYLAN’S 115TH HAIRCUT”

“Sometimes I get into these moods where I feel like there will always be a gap between what I want to say, and what I actually end up writing,” Ada Lea says of the latest single off her new album when i paint my masterpiece. “I start comparing myself. The mood that evening was comparing myself to Bob Dylan. And why not? In order to pick myself up off the floor after saying things like ‘I could never write a song like Bob Dylan,’ which of course, is true, I had to reverse the thought ‘could he write one like me?’ Whether or not that was a good thing, it was something.”

GRANT-LEE PHILLIPS – “LITTLE MEN”

“Some of the oldest and most enduring songs in the American Songbook are those that express the longing for freedom,” says Grant-Lee Phillips of “Little Men” from his upcoming album In the Hour of Dust. “It tells us a great deal about the founding of our country and the denial of freedom from its very outset. All these years later, such aspirations are still not guaranteed. This is a song of freedom – a spiritual, based on a firm belief in humanity.”

SLOAN – “DREAM DESTROYER”

All four members of Sloan write and sing, each with their own distinctive styles. The riffy, hard-rock sound on “Dream Destroyer” could only be from Patrick Pentland. He says: “Combining my/our love of glam, shoegaze, and power pop, the song is an ode to lost love, past mistakes, and the recklessness that has been the blueprint of my life, for better or worse. Worse in terms of relationships, better in terms of fodder for hit songs. A door slams shut, a window smashes open.” New album Based on the Best Seller will be out September 26.

EMILY YACINA – “TALK ME DOWN”

Emily Yacina announced a new album, Veilfall, due out September 26. It’s her first album in almost six years, and the lead single is the pretty, delicate “Talk Me Down.” “‘Talk Me Down’ came to be from my dear friend Trish McGowan’s beat,” she says. “A few years ago, she sent me a soundcloud playlist with instrumentals and beats she had made. This one immediately struck me as being very special. The lyrics and melodies on top came easily — a testament to her musicality. It’s a fun song about the fear of vulnerability, which is a major theme of the whole album.”

REUBEN’S DAUGHTERS – “YOU THINK ABOUT IT”

Reuben’s Daughters, the musical project of UK artist Reuben Myles Tyghe, will release his second album, Leylanding, later this year. Details are still fuzzy but he’s released the album’s lush, inviting first single.

SQUANDERERS (WENDY EISENBERG, DAVID GRUBBS, KRAMER) – “THEME FOR NARCOLEPTICS”

The trio of guitarists Wendy Eisenberg and David Grubbs and producer Kramer, Squanderers have announced new album SKANTAGIO which will be out August 22 via Shimmy-Disc. Get a taste now from the tranquil “Theme for Narcoleptics.”

PREWN – “SYSTEM”

It’s the title track from Prewn’s first album in two years.
