ABBA’s “Gimme, Gimme, Gimme (A Man After Midnight)” has hit 1 billion streams on Spotify.
The iconic disco classic by the legendary Swedish pop group was originally issued as the only new song on the quartet’s Greatest Hits Vol. 2, released in October 1979. The single was a global smash, hitting No. 1 in multiple countries including Belgium, Finland, Denmark, and Japan. However, the track was never released as a single in America or Canada, reportedly due to the decline of disco’s popularity in North America following the notorious “Disco Demolition Night” at Chicago’s Comiskey Park in July 1979.
Helping drive “Gimme, Gimme, Gimme (A Man After Midnight)” to the 1 billion club on Spotify is its popularity with Gen Z listeners, who accounted for 50% of the 11 million ABBA discoveries on the streaming platform this year. This age group also makes up half of ABBA’s global audience on Spotify, where the quartet’s streams have shot up 150% over the past five years.
