Update your late-night schedules: Jimmy Kimmel Live will be off the air for an unspecified amount of time. The news follows a comment made by host Jimmy Kimmel during his monologue on Monday’s show regarding the death of Charlie Kirk; an ABC spokesperson told Vulture that “Jimmy Kimmel Live will be preempted indefinitely.”

Earlier, Deadline reported that FCC chairman Brendan Carr had issued a “warning” to ABC, with regard to this specific quote from Kimmel: “We had some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and with everything they can to score political points from it.”

Wednesday afternoon, TV affiliate group Nexstar announced that it would be pre-empting Jimmy Kimmel Live. “Nexstar strongly objects to recent comments made by Mr. Kimmel concerning the killing of Charlie Kirk and will replace the show with other programming in its ABC-affiliated markets,” the company said in an official statement. ABC’s decision followed the Nexstar announcement.

With The Late Show with Stephen Colbert set to end in May 2026, only NBC’s late-night shows remain unaffected by the current political climate at this time. What happens next remains to be seen, but Kimmel’s current contract at ABC expires in 2026, and he told People magazine in February 2024 that it could be his last. He also recently obtained Italian citizenship.
