Adolescence’s reign at the top of the UK Netflix charts has ended, as a true crime hit has taken its place in the number one spot.
Since its arrival on March 13, the drama, about a father (Stephen Graham) whose world is turned upside down when his son is accused of murder, has rarely been out of the headlines.
Hailed for its storytelling and prompting discussions about toxic masculinity in society, producer/star Graham has said he had “no idea” of the impact that it would have, and that he and partner Hannah Walters are already in talks for a follow up.
However, according to today’s (April 3) daily data from the streamer, the show has been usurped by the documentary series Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer. Released on March 31, the series tells the story of the Gilgo Beach serial killings, told from the perspective of loved ones and victims.
The series of killings claimed over 11 victims from 1993 until 2011. Many of the victims’ remains were discovered between 2010 and 2011 during a police search in Suffolk County, New York. The documentary series’ director, Liz Garbus, made a narrative film about the same subject – 2020 drama Lost Girls starring Amy Ryan and Thomasin McKenzie.
The drop to second should not worry the makers of the show, however, as its legacy already appears to have been assured. In late March, it was confirmed that Netflix would be making the Adolescence available to all UK secondary schools in the hope that its examination of the internet and toxic online influences will help steer young people on the right path.
Elsewhere, Elon Musk was slammed for spreading misinformation about the show, sharing posts that falsely claimed that the show was based on the 2024 murder of three children in Southport. The show had been in production long before the crime happened.
