Aimee Mann’s Latest Comic Reveals Why She Nearly Passed On Rush Reunion Tour

1 hour ago 1

Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee are back on tour as Rush for the first time since drum god Neil Peart's death in 2020, now with Anika Nilles behind the kit. At their first show, Aimee Mann joined them onstage at the Los Angeles-area Kia Forum to sing her guest spot on "Time Stand Still." Mann reprised her appearance at three more Forum gigs over the past week. Presumably she won't be with Rush when they move on to Mexico City this week. She almost wasn't with them in LA.

Mann is working on a graphic memoir, and in the meantime she sometimes draws comics about her life and publishes them on Instagram. The latest explains that when Lee first emailed her about guesting with Rush back in March, she "was quite frankly in a shitty place and couldn't imagine doing it." In the next panel she adds, "I was in such a hole I couldn't even answer one way or the other," which had her assuming, "He's going to think I'm such an asshole!" Ultimately, despite her concerns about performing in such a big venue in a barely functional state, she knew she'd regret it if she didn't try, so she accepted Lee's offer. "They were so kind and welcoming," she writes. "I felt protected by their bubble of music and Canadian warmth, and buoyed aloft by their fans."

It's a cute comic, and it has a much happier ending than the one about getting dropped from Steely Dan's tour in 2022. Take a look at it right here:

It continues to be Aimee Mann Summer. Besides the Rush collabs, she scored the off-Broadway adaptation of Girl, Interrupted (co-starring King Princess) and appears as herself in the sci-fi comedy-drama O Horizon, both of which opened this month. She’s also hitting the road to play her 2000 album Bachelor No. 2 Or, The Last Remains Of The Dodo in full on a Midwest tour that includes a stop at the revived Eaux Claires Festival.
