Algernon Cadwallader by Scott Troyan
Emo revival OGs Algernon Cadwallader have been playing reunion shows since 2022, and now they’ve announced a new album! Titled Trying Not to Have a Thought, it’s the band’s first since their 2011 sophomore album Parrot Flies, and first with the original lineup of vocalist/bassist Peter Helmis, guitarists Joe Reinhart and Colin Mahony, and drummer Nick Tazza since their 2008 debut album Some Kind of Cadwallader. It’s also their first for Saddle Creek, which Joe is also signed to as a member of Hop Along. Like all of Algernon’s material, it was self-produced.
The album comes out on September 12 (pre-order), and lead single “Hawk” is out now. It makes the 14 years since Parrot Flies feel like nothing at all, and it pretty much sounds like a lost gem from the original Algernon era. I have a feeling it’s gonna go over very well with the Algernon fanbase, but you can decide for yourself by checking out the song and its music video below. It’s directed by Darby Irrgang and Ricky Christian.
Algernon also announced a fall tour, beginning on November 6 in Portland, OR and wrapping up on December 15 in Cambridge, MA. There’s a NYC show on December 4 at Racket. Find all dates listed below and get pre-sale tickets starting today (8/5) at 10 AM local time.
