Amazon Taps Spider-Man, Harry Potter Alum to Produce New James Bond Movie

When it was revealed that longtime James Bond stewards Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson would no longer be producing the next 007 movie for Amazon MGM Studios, the question became “Who will?” The answer, as reported across multiple trades Tuesday morning, is Amy Pascal and David Heyman, two veteran producers who know plenty about the world of massive franchises.

Pascal, in her role as an executive and chairperson at Sony/Columbia Pictures, oversaw the production of the Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield Spider-Man movies as well as James Bond adventures Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, and Skyfall. After leaving Sony in 2015, she became an independent producer on movies including The Post, Little Women, and the Oscar-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Heyman, meanwhile, managed to help shepherd the Harry Potter books to the big screen, also overseeing the Fantastic Beasts movies as well. In a joint statement, the producing duo said that “James Bond is one of the most iconic characters in the history of cinema. We are humbled to follow in the footsteps of Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson who made so many extraordinary films and honored and excited to keep the spirit of Bond very much alive as he embarks on his next adventure.”

What that next adventure will look like is unclear, as there’s currently no director and no new actor cast as Bond. As far back as 2022, Broccoli and Wilson had only said that they wanted an actor in his 30s (ruling out a lot of older and younger actors), but Pascal and Heyman are theoretically operating with a clean slate as to what direction to now take the franchise — presumably in a bigger direction than before.

Both producers have a track record for navigating the peculiarities of franchise storytelling while still remaining true to the source material, though figuring out how to tell a Bond story in this current era will undoubtedly be a lot more complicated than remembering if James likes his martinis shaken or stirred. Still, for Bond fans, this is at least a promising sign that 007 will be back sooner than later.
