As anticipation builds for Borderland, their 15th studio album, Finnish metal veterans Amorphis have released the first glimpse of what’s to come. The single "Light and Shadow" has debuted today, giving us a taste of the album’s thematic and sonic direction.
Keyboardist and composer Santeri Kallio shared some insights into the creative process: "I threw my brain into the closet and went with the flow, without stressing about opinions. I didn’t want to repeat the old or copy what we’ve already done before. When I heard Tomi’s final vocal parts, I realised that ‘Light and Shadow’ would be the perfect introduction to our new album!"
Scheduled for release on September 26, 2025, via Reigning Phoenix Music, Borderland is now available for pre-order in a variety of formats, including limited edition box sets, special vinyl editions, digipaks, CDs, and digital formats.
The album marks several creative shifts for the band. After recording their last four albums in Sweden, Amorphis opted for Hansen Studios in Denmark, working with renowned producer Jacob Hansen (known for collaborations with Volbeat, Amaranthe, Primal Fear, among others).
The album’s artwork was designed by Dutch artist Marald Van Haasteren, whose previous credits include Metallica, Black Sabbath, Kvelertak, and Alcest.
While these new collaborations have brought fresh perspectives, Amorphis continue their long-standing partnership with lyricist Pekka Kainulainen, who has been writing for the band since Silent Waters in 2007.
Kainulainen reflected on the inspiration behind Borderland: "The generations that came here before us, our ancestors, also had to face death and destruction. Honouring the mythologies of mankind, as well as the listeners of Amorphis, I wrote lyrics that hopefully convey some of the humility and strength that mankind has always depended on."
