Arcadea, the synth act featuring Mastodon drummer-singer Brann Dailor, have announced their sophomore album The Exodus of Gravity, arriving August 22nd via Relapse Records.
The LP sees Dailor handling lead vocals, as heard on the first single “Fuzzy Planet,” which can be streamed now.
His singing takes centerstage for the first half of the track, which starts out in a synth-pop style before an instrumental breakdown from synth players Core Atoms and João Nogueira — the only real hint of prog on the track. Bryan Bankovich directed the accompanying music video: an alien prom with Arcadea providing the live entertainment, complete with Dailor rocking an Alladin Sane-era Bowie look.
“It’s about that first fuzzy feeling you get when you fall in love,” said Atoms of the track/video in a press release. “Our lead character is recognizing that the spore has gotten in them and they’re starting to change. They’re awakening to all the beauty that’s around.”
Dailor went on to explain that The Exodus of Gravity skews more toward danceable songs as opposed to the prog of Arcadea’s 2017 self-titled debut, which the singer/drummer compared to his full-time band.
“There’s something really hopeful and uplifting about it from a musical aesthetic,” Dailor said. “The object was to get a little more dancey and a little more fun. As much as we liked how proggy the last Arcadea album was, it reminded me of what I already do in Mastodon. We wanted to explore the idea of doing something different. So, I wanted to really concentrate on groove and dance and embracing the electronic aspect of it.”
The Exodus of Gravity was self-produced and recorded with engineer Tom Tapley at West End Sound, in the basement of Mastodon’s practice facility, Ember City. You can pre-order the album on vinyl and cassette via Relapse.
