Austin Butler has recalled a time when he went temporarily blind and thought he was “dying” while travelling on a plane.

In a new interview with Men’s Health, he describes an incident where he was flying to the set of 2023’s The Bikeriders where he was “jolted awake” with a migraine, and discovered he had temporarily lost his vision. “It felt like the life was being sucked from my body” he told the outlet. “I suddenly felt a euphoric sensation, and I actually genuinely thought I was dying”.

The condition continued for several minutes until he regained his sight. The actor put the incident down to sleep deprivation, caused by a busy schedule that has seen him star in five movies and a TV show in the last three years.

While he has acted on the big and small screens since 2005, Butler became a leading man in 2022 thanks to the hit musical biopic Elvis, where he played the legendary artist. Since then, he has gone on to feature in The Bikeriders, Dune: Part Two, and the forthcoming crime thriller Caught Stealing. He also played the lead in Apple TV+ war series Masters Of The Air.

He can currently be seen in Eddington, playing a charismatic cult leader who draws in the impressionable wife of a local sheriff, played by Emma Stone. The movie co-stars Joaquin Phoenix and Pedro Pascal, following the lives of several people as tensions overspill during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Recently, Austin Butler gave a shout out to IDLES during a music quiz interview. The Bristol band scored Caught Stealing, and the actor revealed himself to be a fan. Last year, he talked about one high profile film he didn’t get, recalling an unsuccessful audition to play Peeta Mellark in The Hunger Games.
