There’s a certain kind of chaos that only exists when you’re young, surrounded by guitars, bad decisions, and just enough ambition to think you’ve got it figured out. That’s the energy fueling Mile End Kicks, the new indie film set in Montreal’s 2011 blog rock scene, where a music critic gets tangled up with the very bands she’s supposed to cover. When stars Barbie Ferreira, Devon Bostick, and writer/director Chandler Levack sat down with Kyle Meredith, the conversation hit everything from portraying real-life inspiration to the current state of indie film. Listen above or wherever you get your podcasts.
Ferreira, who plays a version of Levack in her early 20s, immediately clocked the script’s honesty. “I love a script that’s written by a woman who’s writing about her life,” she says, noting how quickly she recognized the specificity. “This woman is writing from personal experience because this is too real.” That realism extended beyond the page, with Ferreira pulling directly from Levack’s wardrobe and mannerisms while shaping the character for the screen. “We wanted to make something a little bit different,” she explains, “but it always felt tethered in reality.” That grounding also applies to the film’s tone, which leans hard into discomfort. As Levack puts it, “This is such a better story if she’s the messiest kind of anti-hero in the film.”
For Bostick, who plays a guitarist despite not being one, the role came with its own learning curve and a familiar kind of early-20s anxiety. “I operate on such a level 10 of stress no matter what,” he jokes. “So it just kind of folds right into my daily life.” That lived-in tension mirrors the film’s broader world, one Levack describes as both personal and widely recognizable. “It just feels like a memory,” Bostick says of reading the script. “It doesn’t feel like it’s made up.”
Meanwhile, Levack sees the film as part of a larger shift, and Ferreira echos the sentiment: “I’m betting on indie film,” Ferreira says. “You can make a $5 million movie and actually have your creative vision fulfilled.”
