Benicio Del Toro and the cast of KPop Demon Hunters appeared in sketches on the most recent (October 4) episode of Saturday Night Live, hosted by Bad Bunny.

The music sensation fronted the show after being announced as the half time performer at next year’s Super Bowl. The announcement drew backlash from conservatives politicians, something that was mocked by the artist during the opening monologue.

The format of the show also means he appeared in several sketches, and the Puerto Rican singer had some surprise guests in store for two of them.

Oscar winner Benicio Del Toro appeared during a sketch set in medieval Spain, where Bad Bunny played a king declaring rules about the Spanish language which poke gentle fun at its quirks. The One Battle After Another actor appears toward the end of the sketch, declaring that Spanish speakers will roll their R’s for “a long time”, and that “we should take a nap in the middle of the day” (referring to the Spanish tradition of a siesta). In another sketch, Bad Bunny plays a man meeting up with old friends discussing what they have been watching over the summer. His character seems fixated with Netflix hit KPop Demon Hunters, insisting the movie is based on real events.

Ejae, Audrey Nuna and Rei Ami, who are the singing voices of girl group Huntr/x, appear at first in a vision to Bad Bunny’s character, then at the end in person where they battle Jinu (played by SNL comedian Bowen Yang) using their songs in front of an astonished group. Their performance of the song ‘Golden’ marks the trio’s first televised appearance since the film’s worldwide success, becoming the most popular film in Netflix history and sparking a pop culture phenomenon. Plans for a live action remake and an animated sequel are in the works.

Recently, the creator of Kpop Demon Hunters said the movie originally had nothing to do with K-pop.
