Remember Two Minutes To Late Night? That was my motherfucking shit. Two Minutes To Late Night started off as a metal-themed late-night talk show parody at the tragically defunct Brooklyn venue St. Vitus, but it turned into something else during the pandemic. The comedian Jordan Olds, in character as Gwarsenio Hall, would round up heavy music luminaries to do remote all-star cover songs — some metal, some not. It was a bright spot during a dark time; I looked forward to a new cover every week. Now, Olds has a new project of his own, and he just dropped a very different cover on us.
Last year, Olds launched his serious "gothic sludge" project Blood Vulture and released the debut album Die Close, which included contributions from people like Kristin Hayter, AFI's Jade Puget, and Shadows Fall's Brian Fair. Blood Vulture toured with Gwar and Thursday (separately), and they're getting ready to play more shows with Final Gasp and Pallbearer. Today, Olds releases a new one-off single, and it's a cover of Converge's title track from their classic 2004 album You Fail Me.
"You Fail Me" is a heavy motherfucking song, and Blood Vulture has done a heavy motherfucking cover, turning it into something grander and more theatrical, with clean vocals and everything. It almost sounds... bluesy? It's a blast to hear, especially after all the history between Converge and Two Minutes To Midnight. The series did an all-star cover of "The Broken Vow" in 2022, and Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou and drummer Ben Koller were regular contributors to covers of other people's songs. Also, Converge just dropped the extremely sick album Love Is Not Enough, and they've got another one called Hum Of Hurt coming soon. Below, check out the Blood Vulture version of "You Fail Me" and the Converge original.
