Boardwalk Empire actor Devin Harjes has passed away at the age of 41, it has been confirmed.

Across his career, the actor also appeared in a number of other well known series, including Daredevil, Manifest, Orange Is The New Black and Elementary.

Harjes passed away last Tuesday (May 27) in New York City from an illness, with The Hollywood Reporter reporting that he had been diagnosed with cancer in February.

“He was an artist of great conviction who never gave less than one hundred percent to any role he undertook,” a representative for the star said (via NBC News). “As a person, he was generous, kind, understanding and devoted to his family and friends, a great horseback rider and had a magic way with all animals.”

Harjes was born in Texas and moved to New York to pursue an acting career, starting with off Broadway shows as well as student and independent films.

He went on to play the role of boxer Jack Dempsey in HBO‘s Boardwalk Empire, as well as Oscar in Marvel TV series Daredevil and Clyde in DC‘s Gotham. He also portrayed Arlen in Netflix’s Orange Is The New Black, and Nick Agnes in Elementary.

Most-recently, Harjes played the role of Pete Baylor across nine episodes of Manifest, which is his final credited role.

An obituary shared on his website states that the star was also a “dedicated student of martial arts and a regular at the gym” and “often joked it was safer than getting kicked in the face by a horse”.

It also says that for film The Forest Is Red, Harjes won Best Actor at Italy’s Tolentino International Film Festival, and earned an Honorable Mention for Best Supporting Actor for The Boyz Of Summer at the Long Island International Film Expo.
