The long-awaited follow-up to 2019’s Borderlands 3 is due to release September 12 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC. However in June it was confirmed Switch 2 owners would have to wait to play Borderlands 4.
It’s now been announced that the Nintendo Switch 2 version of Borderlands 4 will launch October 3 with four-player cross-play enabled.

Taking to X after the announcement, Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford confirmed that the Switch 2 version of Borderlands 4 won’t look as polished as it does on other consoles. “It was important to us to not cut anything and to support cross play with other platforms. So, no. It’ll be mostly around 30 fps, with some dips in some intense moments such as heavy combat or if hosting a multiplayer game in handheld mode, etc,” he explained.
He went on to confirm that the Switch 2 version of Borderlands 4 would utilise the console’s new mouse mode and physical versions of the title will still require a digital download because “it’s a big game.”
Responding to criticism that Borderlands 3 is still “unplayable” on the Switch, Pitchford said: “Borderlands 3 was not made for Switch 2. I want us to get on that and see what we can do. We need some help and we need some time. Borderlands 4 is everything right now.”
Earlier this year, Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford explained that the team were making a dedicated Switch 2 version of Borderlands 4, rather than simply porting the game. “It’s pretty astonishing how perfect this platform is.”
“The Nintendo Switch 2 has been a joy to work with. It’s very powerful. It’s an incredible machine in a very tight form factor, and we love being on the bleeding edge with our graphics and the experience that we’re creating, and the Nintendo Switch 2 makes all that possible. We don’t feel like we’re fighting the system, we feel like the system’s enabling us and empowering us to make the best version of Borderlands 4 that we can. As a game developer, it’s awesome.”
It’s also been confirmed that Borderlands 4 won’t cost $80, despite Pitchford’s previous comments about “real fans” finding a way to pay any price for the game.
In other news, Pokémon surprise released a new puzzle game yesterday (July 22) but fans aren’t impressed with Friends due to how much it costs to play.
