Bruce Springsteen has revealed that Deliver Me From Nowhere, his forthcoming biopic, contained moments from his life that were so “painful” he couldn’t be on set.

The film, directed by Scott Cooper and starring Jeremy Allen White, chronicles the New Jersey legend’s journey to recording his sixth album, ‘Nebraska’, in 1982. On the edge of becoming a worldwide phenomenon, the film will show the artist at a much more vulnerable moment in his life. Succession star Jeremy Strong plays Jon Landau, Springsteen’s manager and record producer; while Adolescence actor Stephen Graham portrays his father, Douglas Springsteen.

The Boss has given his blessing to the “fantastic” film in the past, as well as making regular visits to the set. However, he said he was aware that the man playing him may feel some pressure seeing his real-life counterpart during filming.

“Jeremy Allen White was very, very tolerant of me the days that I would appear on the set,” Springsteen told Rolling Stone. “I said to him, ‘Look, anytime I’m in the way, just give me the look and I’m on my way home.’ So the days that I got out there, he was wonderfully tolerant with me being there. And it was just fun. It was enjoyable”.

However, he revealed there were some days he couldn’t bring himself to show up, as the context of the scenes were too emotional.

“I mean, there’s some unusualness to it because the movie involves, in some ways, some of the most painful days of my life,” he explained. “If there was a scene coming up that was sometimes really deeply personal, I wanted the actors to feel completely free, and I didn’t want to get in the way, and so I would just stay at home”,

Deliver Me From Nowhere is in cinemas from October 24.

The first trailer for the film was released on Wednesday (June 18), and some fans were so impressed by White’s singing that they’re convinced his covers of Springsteen classics are fake.
