Carmen Villain? She's the baaaaad guuuuy. Duh. Oh wait. Wrong artist. Carmen Villain is Carmen Maria Hillestad, the Michigan-born Norwegian-Mexican musical artist specializing in experimental electronic composition.
Today she's announced Memoria, the follow-up to 2022's acclaimed Only Love From Now On. Lead single "Entre Nosotros" (translation: "Between Us") demonstrates Villain's approach, blending archival sounds with new recordings, including her own clarinet playing combined with Johanna Orellana's flutes and Eivind Lønning's trumpet). The results here blearily thump and gurgle through an ambient fog, evoking a haze of fleeting memory in a way that really lives up to that album title.

If Mexico had defeated England last night for the right to face Norway in the World Cup semifinals, I wonder who Villain would have rooted for.
