Carmen Villain announces new LP Memoria, shares lead single “Entre Nosotros”

The record sees the artist and producer build on the deep-listening approach of her 2022 breakthrough Only Love from Now On, this time drawing directly on the writings of Pauline Oliveros and Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s 2021 film Memoria. The result is a narratively sequenced collection of spectral dub that reconfigures samples from Villain’s own archive into what the label describes as a “cosmic introspection.”

Much of the LP was assembled from a combination of new recordings and older archival material. Frequent collaborator Johanna Orellana contributes flutes, Eivind Lønning appears on trumpet, and Villain’s own clarinet recordings thread through the pieces. Those acoustic sources are fractured and processed.

Villian's recent work composing for contemporary dance and installation feeds into Memoria’s heightened sense of physical space, with small sounds ballooning into vast environments while larger ones recede.

Villain has spoken before of the mixing console as a site of memory, with dub’s unpredictable manipulation of volumes, filters and textures mirroring the way recollection mutates over time. That principle sits at the centre of Memoria.
